More About

West Coast

Saldanha Bay is home to a diverse range of marine life, including over 200 species of fish, 3 species of dolphins, and 2 species of whales. The bay is also an important breeding ground for African penguins, which are listed as an endangered species.
It has also been a strategically important location for centuries, due to its sheltered waters and natural deepwater port. During World War II, the bay was used as a naval base by the South African Navy, and today it remains an important industrial hub for the region. Saldanha Bay is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, with a range of activities on offer including kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing. The bay is also home to several beautiful beaches, including Bluewater Bay and Langebaan Lagoon.
Just outside of Saldanha Bay is the West Coast Fossil Park, which is home to a rich collection of fossils dating back millions of years. Visitors to the park can take a guided tour of the dig site and learn about the prehistoric animals that once roamed the area. The area is home to several San rock art sites, as well as the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve, which was the site of a historic battle between Dutch colonizers and the indigenous Khoi people.
