Don't miss the iconic masterpiece, "Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe," by renowned Haida artist Bill Reid. Often referred to as the "Heart of the Airport," this colossal bronze sculpture tips the scales at over 5 tons. Inspired by 19th-century miniature canoes crafted from argillite—a soft sedimentary rock native to Skidegate on Haida Gwaii—the piece is a tribute to both craftsmanship and cultural narrative. Like many historic miniatures, the canoe is teeming with beings and creatures from Haida legends and oral histories. These figures interact in a dynamic and sometimes fierce manner, much like rivalrous siblings, bringing an energetic tension to the piece.
